As a child no matter what was happening in my world, the holidays represented magic. My mother’s cookies filled me with warmth. Christmas Eve tradition allowed for me to open one gift. This gift was always a new set of pajamas. A few hours later, I’d slip into my new swag, go to bed and not sleep a wink. Each part of my being was filled with excitement and anticipation, sleep was not an option. Back then, each new holiday season brought renewed bliss.
As adults, many of us have experienced a very different side to the holiday season - increased stressed, the winter blues or just plain exhaustion. Our already busy schedules combined with added pressures, can be complete overload. The pace is faster. Our daily routines change. Longer to-do lists. Financial pressures. Family obligations. Travel. Increased expectations…. And these are just the physical & mental layers.
The emotional layer, is also very real. The holidays can amplify some yucky feels, let’s be honest. They could be a reminder of the loss of a loved one or intensify feelings of loneliness especially, if you’re single or away from family. Inadequacies or envy could come up because according to your social media feed – everyone’s life is perfect (you know that’s BULLSHIT btw… say that 3 times out loud.)
The benefits of making space for YOU are comparable to Popeye & his spinach. Each layer of you becomes stronger. I know, from experience. Be easy, be kind, be gentle to yourself and others this holiday season and beyond!
